Denmark has signed a contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to acquire the Coastal Defense System with the Naval Strike Missile (NSM CDS), in an agreement valued at over $117 million.
The new system will enhance the country’s ability to counter modern naval threats from land, extending its strategic coverage from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea.
The NSM CDS consists of an advanced fire control system, NSM missiles, and mobile launch platforms. The choice of the system aligns with recent decisions by the Danish Navy, which had already selected the NSM to replace the Harpoon missiles on its frigates, ensuring standardization and greater operational efficiency.
With this purchase, Denmark becomes the fifth NATO country to adopt this type of land-based coastal artillery, joining nations such as Poland, the United States, Romania, and Latvia. The decision also reinforces Denmark’s tradition of employing mobile coastal defense systems, an experience that was crucial in the donation of a mobile missile battery to Ukraine in 2022.
